Laboratory Introduction

The General Chemistry Laboratory provides practical instruction for undergraduate students in engineering and technical fields related to chemistry. This one-credit course is a core requirement and includes weekly 2-hour sessions.


Equipment and Instruments

In addition to various glassware and laboratory tools, the laboratory houses the following instruments:

  • Distillation Unit: For producing distilled water.
  • Conductometer: For measuring conductivity.
  • Conventional Oven: For heating and drying samples.
  • Analytical Balance (up to 3 decimal places): For precise mass measurements.
  • Water Bath (Bain-Marie): For temperature-controlled experiments.
  • pH Meter: For measuring acidity and alkalinity.
  • Spectrophotometer: For analyzing absorbance and transmittance of solutions.

Laboratory Topics

  1. Laboratory Orientation:

    • Introduction to the laboratory environment, safety signs, chemical warnings, essential safety principles, first aid, and lab regulations.
  2. Glassware and Equipment Familiarization:

    • Proper handling and usage of laboratory glassware and instruments, including mechanical and electronic balances.
  3. Physical and Chemical Properties of Substances:

    • Examination of commonly used laboratory chemicals, solution preparation, and concentration units.
  4. Experiments and Procedures:

    • Determination of Solution Concentration: Using density.
    • Equivalent Weight of Metals: Analytical techniques to determine equivalent weight.
    • Molecular Mass Determination: For volatile liquids and gases.
    • Reaction Kinetics: Measuring chemical reaction rates.
    • Chemical Equilibrium: Investigating equilibrium principles.
    • Spectrophotometry: Quantitative analysis using light absorption.
    • Acid-Base Titration: Understanding neutralization reactions.
    • Redox Titration: Exploring oxidation-reduction reactions.
    • Water Hardness: Measuring hardness levels.
    • Law of Conservation of Mass: Experimental verification.
